Melton Mowbray & District Model Engineering Society

The aim of this section is to provide information to prospective members, with an interest in modeling activities in our local area.It contains a little of our background and some of the benefits of membership. Our Society,a company limited by guarantee, has been in existence since 1978.It's main aims being to foster the local development of the model engineering pastime across a broad range of interest and age groups and also to the young and beginner friendly help and experienced guidance. We provide our membership with the opportunity to meet in a congenial atmosphere. We hope to increase our knowledge of the hobby to everyone's benefit whilst enjoying the company of fellow enthusiasts.

Currently, the Society has around a hundred members and the headquarters are in the village of Whissendine near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire. The meetings are held at the Sports Club on the outskirts of the village on the second Monday of each month. It is also home to the Society's permanent railway with both raised and ground level track. Our annual Whissendine Steam Rally is one of the foremost miniature steam events in the country, often attracting around a hundred miniature road engines.

The Society also mounts a display of members work at the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition in October each year.

Our president is Lady Gretton who gives considerable support and encouragement to the Society.Members of the Society are involved in the building and operation of various types of models including traction engines, boats, clocks, workshop equipment and many other items. It is not necessary to be an engineer to build a model;all that is needed is a enthusiasm, determination and the interest to see a long term project through.

Modern technology is being introduced to the hobby and a number of model engineering suppliers are offering pre-machined parts and kits to enable would-be builders to complete a model in a much shorter time without the need for expensive machines and tools and the skill and the experience to use them.
